Instructions
This site functions as a digital archive of the maps in Carleton’s collection. Each entry contains a thumbnail image of the map, introductory information about its appearance and history, as well as a list of references. Where possible, the entry includes a link to a better view of the map at a library or museum that holds the original.
To view the entire collection, simply click on the “Browse Items” tab on the left side of the home page. To view exhibits created by students in Professor Morse’s HIST 231 course, click on the “Browse Exhibits” tab. There you will find maps grouped under a common theme. To search for specific maps, mapmakers, or terms, use the search bar on the left side of the page. Advanced search is available by clicking the three dots on the right of the search bar.
A note on images: Since most of our maps are published facsimiles, images are thumbnails to comply with copyright laws, unless we have explicit permission from the publisher to display a higher resolution image. We provide higher resolution images of the original maps in our collection. In all cases, the “relation” field contains links to other collections where you can find good quality images of the maps.
