Welcome to Mapping the World, a database of the facsimile maps (and some originals) held in Gould Library Special Collections at Carleton College in Northfield, MN. This site has been compiled by undergraduate students in Professor Victoria Morse’s History 231 class. The project began in 2018 and is ongoing.
Carleton’s collection comprises facsimiles of maps dating from roughly the 4th-17th centuries CE. In addition, the library holds a collection of original maps of Germany dating from the 16th-18th centuries.
The site is intended to supplement the library catalog by providing contextual information about each map. We hope that the site will make these items easier for students and faculty to use for research and creative projects in a wide range of disciplines.
